Richmond, Va. - Drexel cut an 18-point second-half lead by Virginia Commonwealth to five points after a furious rally midway though the period, but the top-seeded Rams (26-6) managed to hold off the Dragons (23-8) for a 63-56 victory in the semifinals of the CAA Tournament. Frank Elegar led Drexel with 15 points and eight rebounds in the loss.
Drexel's stifling defense forced 14 VCU turnovers in the first half. But the Rams forged a 10-point lead at the break while the CAA's Defensive Player of the Year Chaz Crawford was shackled with foul trouble for half of the opening period. Scott Rodgers distributed a career-high seven assists in the game and Bashir Mason chipped in 12 points and helped hold All-CAA first teamer Eric Maynor to just five points while forcing him to commit five turnovers in the contest.
Michael Anderson and Jesse Pellot-Rosa led the Rams, who shot 50 percent in the game, with 16 points apiece. Drexel shot 45.8 percent from the field in the game and was outrebounded by VCU 27-25.
